Academic Team FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Academic Team? The RDES Academic Team is a group of fourth and fifth grade students who compete against other schools in the area. The academic team has three components: Written Assessments, Future Problem Solving, and Quick Recall
What exactly is Quick Recall? Quick Recall is a match consisting of two teams of four students each. An open-ended question is given and the fastest person to buzz in gets a point. Questions cover all subject areas.
What is Future Problem Solving (FPS)? FPS competitions are a chance for our students to showcase their creative thinking skills. A group of students will be given a future scene and will be asked to brainstorm problems that could arise from this scene and ways to solve these problems. This is a great place for your child if they are a “think outside of the box” kind of child.
What is involved in the Written Assessment portion of the team? On the day of Governor’s Cup (see website for details about this event), students can compete in written assessments in a specific subject area.
In what ways will my child compete? Students will practice for all 3 ways to compete (quick recall, future problem solving, and written assessment). Students are allowed to compete in 3 things on the day of the Governor’s Cup. This could mean your child may compete in up to any 3 combinations of the ways to compete. Quick Recall Scrimmages will be held against other schools in our district. The Future Problem Solving and Written Assessments only occur at the District and Regional Governor’s Cup Competition held in February and March.
How does my child join the academic team? There will be tryouts for the Academic Team at the beginning of the year. Each child will take a test containing questions that cover different subject areas. We will choose the top scoring students for the team.
What can we do at home to help prepare my child for competitions? Any types of trivia games are always fun and a great way for kids to have the knowledge for the types of questions that may be asked. Sample questions will also be sent home with students that can also be used for practice. These questions were from previous competitions.
When will practices be held? Academic team practice will be Thursdays from 2:50-4:00, alternating weeks for FPS/Written Assessment and Quick Recall.
What will be the focus of each practice? Mrs. Beers and Mrs. McCarty will alternate leading the practices. Mrs. Beers will focus on FPS/Written Assessments and Mrs. McCarty will focus on the Quick Recall portion. (However, we may fill in for each other from time to time.)
Who can I contact if I have further questions? If you have any more questions, you can contact either of the coaches by e-mail— firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com or by calling the school at 885-6670.
